Managing Internet connectivity for a small business can often be an exercise in frustration. It is a balancing act involving keeping costs down and reducing complexity. Regardless of the size of a business, an online presence has the same minimal requirements.
- A domain name and a way to manage it.
- A website and a means of maintaining it.
- Electronic mail and the ability to manage mailboxes and forwarding.
- Internet connectivity for your servers and your end-users (not necessarily the same thing).
- Security.
Even the smallest of companies need to implement security measures in today's online maketplace. At a minimum, email needs to be filtered for spam, viruses and trojans. Servers that interact with the Internet need to be protected at a network level as well as an application level.
Trans-IP inc. is a new kind of Internet service provider. We offer high-end, scalable hosting and access solutions for growing companies. We provide our customers the advantages of dealing with a local Internet service provider as well as the affordability of web-hosting companies. We also believe that security is not an optional component to be added as a line-item in every bid. Security is something we offer from day one. Our customers have chosen us because they know we do things right, the first time.
Sans Digital Tower RAID
Sysadmin — Mon, 06/20/2011 - 10:46
If you are in the need for lots of cheap storage and cannot afford off the shelf NAS solutions, this is definitely an option to look at. These units provide an external box with 4-8 drive bays that connects to a PC via e-sata interface. The e-sata interface must be able to support a port multiplier option for this to work and the units usually come with a dual port PCI-E e-sata controller. Sans Digital is not the only manufacturer/supplier of this kind of unit.
The Downside To Android - Lack of real encryption options
Sysadmin — Wed, 02/16/2011 - 21:48
Android for mobile devices really is catching on. As much as I love the platform, there are two major flaws that stick out like a sore thumb:
You can't encrypt your entire phones contents- although there are apps to encrypt parts of your phone like sms messages and some of the memory card contents (like , if your phone is lost, stolen, or otherwise), there is the possibility of the retrieval of data from the phone.

Simple Invoices
Sysadmin — Sat, 04/24/2010 - 20:23
Simple Invoices is a neat little PHP/MySQL project that we have been following that can manage billing and invoices for a small business. It is very easy to use and is perfect if you have outgrown the excel spreadsheet management but are not large enough to justify use of a larger full featured accounting package. Another advantage is that this platform can be made to be accessible from anywhere.

Cheap Property in Detroit
Sysadmin — Tue, 01/26/2010 - 23:26
Its unreal how the prices of houses are so cheap in Detroit. You can find a wide variety of property for under $10,000 USD that is in pretty good shape. Some can even be had for several hundred dollars. Supposedly this kind of thing is happening in a few other US cities as well (like Cleveland). This may be worth following for investment purposes.
